Finding Viable Work At Hone Opportunities

In today's economy, many people are looking for ways to supplement their family income by finding a work from home position. There are many websites, infomercials, radio spots, and print ads claiming to offer work from home businesses or jobs - but of all these, how do you separate out the valid work from home opportunities from the not so valid ones?

When looking for possible work from home jobs, or business opportunities, there is a standard checklist of rules that you should follow. These rules, I've found, apply to every situation - 100% of the time.

1) If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.

Many advertisements claim to allow you to make in excess of 2K dollars a month - in just minutes a day! While this sounds incredibly inviting (who wouldn't want to work for minutes a day netting them thousands of dollars?) the word impossible also screams for my attention. Except for those that are already independently wealthy (either by birth or by years and years of hard work), I cannot name even one viable work from home position that is credible and legal that promises this type of return.

2) You should never have to pay your potential client or employer to begin working with them.

Employers and clients pay you. You do not pay them. It's pretty straight forward. With the exception of a few services which you can pay a monthly membership to gain access to their client files and submit your proposals (ie: Elance, and Odesk) no legitimate employer or client will ever require you to pay a fee up front to work for them or with them. This of course does not take into account the various direct sales business opportunities which do have startup costs (such as the Pampered Chef, Avon, StoryTimeFelts and others). This only refers to businesses that intend to employ you or subcontract your services. If a business requests an upfront payment or deposit from you in advance of you beginning employment - I'd suggest turning the other way - and running as fast as you can.

3) If the company is overseas or out of the country - and promises easy income, it's likely a scam.

I remember applying for a payment processing position once that promised me to work from my home. In deeper investigation of the "job" I discovered that the parent company was located in Great Britain. The website seemed professional, the BBB inquiry I did showed nothing fishy - it was a fairly new company but there were not any complaints against them. Then they outlined what the job was to be. I'd be processing payments for their "Out of the country" clients. They'd send me the money via check, which I'd deposit into a US based bank account. I'd then write a check back to the parent company for the amount minus my 15% commission. With payments coming through in the thousands of dollars - this was a fast and easy way to make money. I turned it down, and ran quickly in the other direction. Why? After being offered this position, I reported them to the BBB. Turns out, it was more than a "make money fast" scam; it could have ruined me and my family financially. The original checks would never clear- in fact after two weeks the bank would have them returned for non sufficient funds. Any checks I wrote on that amount would be returned and I'd be held liable for the difference. Unfortunately, these overseas Money exchanges are plentiful - and illegal - and due to the off shore nature of the business, you as a victim would have no recourse.

Rest assured there are valid work at home business and opportunities out there. You must do your research. You must be careful, and follow your instinct. You can make very good income from home either with your own business or telecommuting for another well established company. You can have success, just watch for the above risk factors, and do your research. If you follow these tips, you will be able to supplement your family income, with the freedom of working from home.
