Residential Resume

The most important part of a job seekers arsenal is their resume.  For many mothers who are starting out on the path to becoming a Work-From-Home-Mom-trepreneur the prospect of writing this one document is terrifying.  For many of us, the only ?job? we?ve held in years, possibly even decades has been that of ?mother?.  While this job is the most important job that any one woman can have in their lifetime, unfortunately, it doesn?t make for impressive resume material.

So how does a mom-trepreneur in training prepare a resume or profile to submit to potential employers or clients?  Here are a few do?s and don?ts.

DO:   Play up your experiences as a community leader, organizer, PTA coach, etc.  These activities are important to prospective employers as it shows strength in discipline, time mastery, leadership, and organizational skills.

DON?T:  Continually repeat that you are a ?Stay At Home Mom? looking for work.  While this point is a strength for some employers, most just simply want a stable, reliable employee or contractor to hire to do the tasks that they need performed.

DO:    List your technical experience in a list, not necessarily as past work experience.  When listed together in a section titled ?technical experience? or ?Relevant Skills? ? it makes the experience much more valid, and present tense rather than focusing on the fact that you may have gained this experience in years past.

DO:  Use a professional email address.  Email accounts such as momma2becky@yourprovider.com or soccermomma5@yourprovider.com do not put forth a professional image.  There are plenty of free email providers out there such as yahoo, gmail, hotmail, or even AIM mail that will allow you to get yourself a professional sounding address.  A professional address will be much more appealing to a prospective employer or client.

DON?T:   Write your resume like a mom?s journal.  While it is extremely impressive that you are the provider of lunches, princess of the PTA, master of the laundry bin, personal chef to 7, and taxi service to your children and their friends, this is NOT valid employment material.  A prospective client or employer will not be impressed by your many motherly duties.  They are looking to hire an employee, not to share stories about carpet stains and laundry mishaps.

The above tips should give you a good start on your resume.   The most important tip to remember, however, is to always be you.   You are a successful, wonderful, fabulous person ? and any employer or client would be happy to work with you.  Let your intelligence, and your experience shine through, the rest will come in due time.
